Why not every company needs a battery

Why not every company needs a battery

Battery storage is often presented as the solution to companies’ energy challenges.
Solar panels? Add a battery.
High energy prices? Get a battery.
Electric vehicles? Definitely get a battery.
Grid congestion? Get a battery.

But it’s not that simple. Not every company currently has a strong business case for energy storage.
And that is actually good news. Because a battery should not be purchased simply because the technology is interesting. It should be purchased because it creates economic value.

The real question isn't “Do we need a battery?”, It's “Can a battery create enough value for our specific energy profile?”

1. Your consumption profile matters

A company with high and predictable electricity consumption throughout the day may have more opportunities to benefit from energy storage than a business with low or irregular consumption.

The timing of your energy use is just as important as the total amount you consume.

2. Peaks can make a big difference

If your site regularly experiences short periods of very high power demand, a battery can potentially reduce these peaks. But if your peaks are rare or difficult to predict, the business case may be much weaker.

3. Solar changes the equation

Companies with solar PV may use a battery to store excess generation and use it later. However, the value depends on when the solar energy is produced and when the company actually consumes electricity. A battery isn't automatically the best solution for every PV installation.

4. The battery needs enough opportunities to create value

A battery costs money whether it is operating or sitting idle. Its economics therefore depend on how often it can generate value — through peak shaving, energy price optimisation, self-consumption or other flexibility services. This is why today's BESS business cases increasingly look at multiple revenue streams rather than relying on a single use case.

5. Sometimes, a battery isn't the best solution

In some cases, the better investment may be:
- Shifting production or consumption
- Smart EV charging
- Improving energy efficiency
- Upgrading the energy management system
- Optimising grid capacity
- Changing the way energy is purchased

The battery should be part of the solution — not the starting point.

Conclusion: Start with the energy profile

Before investing in a battery, companies should analyse their consumption, peaks, solar production, grid connection, electricity prices and operational flexibility, and only then model what a battery could actually save or earn.
Measure first. Simulate second. Invest third.

The right battery can be a powerful energy asset. But the right solution for one company may be completely wrong for another.
At BeLoaded, we believe every company should understand its own energy potential — even if the answer isn't a battery.

So, what does this mean for your company?
